Greetings from the town of Casma, where I am baking in a computer room
in the northern desert of Peru. I'm here for a month, sharing a "mission
experience" with 20 Columbian seminarians and Lay missionaries.
Thank you all, once again, for your superb financial help at the end of
last year. In total, I managed to raise just under ten thousand pounds
for our development work in the village of Vista al Mar, in the 2007
Pisco Earthquake zone.
Last month I spent about half the money and took the donated items down
with me to give to the people. One nice twist to this tale is that I had
breakfast in the main square of Pisco (still open on two sides pending
reconstruction), and saw that the locals had set up a reception centre
for their own donations to the Haiti earthquake victims.
I spent the cash on a roundabout and three see-saws, paint for the
swings, materials and fresh accessories for the leather-goods
cooperative, schoolbooks for all pupils for the new academic year
(starting in March), medical aid for two "special needs" children,
"kiddie sweet packs" for all the children and a food hamper for each
family
