The Beatification Mass, Cofton Park

We had a very early wake up, 3:05am the alarm broke the silence. Up and out we took a damp, windswept drive from Hazel Grove to Wythenshawe.

The rain fell ominously as we wait for the coaches. A daybreak, Papal

journey commenced for the sleepy but expectant pilgrims as we listened

prayerfully to the Pilgim Pack CD.

We were a bit worried as we arrived in Birmingham as it continued to

raining. A diversion sent us to the wrong car park! We had to go right

around the park seeing it from afar as we re-joined the motorway. Quite

a sight. Finally we arrived at the Blue Car Park, on the site of the former

Longbridge Car plant. It was now 7:15 am. We set off on a half hour walk to the park. We picked up a few Pope Benedict XVI flags, haggling successfully and saving £1! We joined the big queue into the park listening to Morning Prayer (live on Radio 4) led by the fabulous Boyce and Stanley. A photograph of the Parish Group preceded the setting up of camp. Picnic breakfasts followed.

News of the arrival of the Holy Father caused a buzz of excitement. We

walked down to the fence hoping to see him. Texts from home helped

keep us posted on his movements. About half an hour later the gates

opened and he drove past us, meters away, an amazing experience, great

photo too.

We processed back to our places for Mass. Being part of such a historic

occasion was exhilarating. This was an unforgettable Mass, the music and

the Beatification itself quite amazing. After Mass it was time once again

for picnics as we basked in the awe and wonder of the experience.

Excited conversations made the walk back to the coaches seem much

shorter as we shared our memories and highlights. There were many snoozing pilgrims on the return journey.

This was an amazing experience and one I will never forget.
